Another school year has come to an end.
It was a busy one for students attending classes at Northwest Catholic District School Board schools.
Education Director Jackie Robinson says it includes visits by authors and online presentations.
“We also participated in over 200 Connected North learning sessions,” says Robinson.
“Those are sessions that come from experts and instructors from all across Canada to teach our kids anything from art to science and engineering. And those activities are all connected to the Ontario curriculum.”
There were also initiatives to improve student achievement.
Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton and St. Mary’s School in Fort Frances participated in Language Nest, allowing for a first-language Ojibwe speaker to work with students to enhance their fluency in the language.
Attention was also paid to math and reading.
“We did have the new reading screeners implemented across all of our schools from grades K to three and beyond. We’re really working on the use of that data to provide really precise teaching focus for the students who require additional learning in reading,” says Robinson.
The Board expanded its YouTube channel with videos aroundĀ faith development and a student series focused on faith and church life.
Improvements were made to keep parents more informed about the education of their children.
Parent engagement sessions included one from Katherine Price, the author of How to Break Up with Your Cell Phone.
A new online portal was also launched for parents to find grade-specific curriculum information and learning activities that they can access and work with their children at home.
