The federal and provincial governments are giving their support to the development of community pastures.
They are setting aside five million dollars for projects.
Community pastures are open to cattle farmers to rent and exist in the Rainy River and Thunder Bay districts.
Ontario’s Agriculture Minister Trevor Jones says they are essential resources in building a stronger cattle and agri-food sector.
“This initiative will help farmers stay competitive and resilient in the face of economic uncertainty,” says Jones.
“By investing in our community pastures, we’re supporting biodiversity, soil health, and resilient grazing systems— all key to a sustainable future for the sector,” states Heath MacDonald, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
The funding will support up to 100% of eligible costs for the design, construction and maintenance of eligible projects.
The initiative is administered by the Ontario Forage Council (OFC), working with the Association of Community Pastures.
